Sir Gavin Williamson has voiced his support for the work of the RSPCA in the face of puppy smuggling, live exports of animals, pet theft and livestock worrying.

Sir Gavin recently attended a parliamentary event to discuss possible improvements to animal welfare. The charity is pushing for changes in the laws regarding puppy smuggling, a cause which Sir Gavin has frequently lent his voice to. Where UK breeders are unable to meet demands for puppies, around 10 to 50% of dogs are imported illegally. Within these routes it is difficult to regulate health and welfare standards, and as such something must be done.

Sir Gavin said: “It was great to meet with the team from the RSPCA and discuss how to impose further regulations on the keep and trade of animals. I’ve always had a deep passion for animals and own dogs myself. I’m therefore keen to support the RSPCA's work and am in full support of their petition for a Bill which would regulate puppy imports and prevent the abuse inherent in the illegal dog trade.”
